Westcliff Warriors Secure Historic CalPac Championship in Dramatic Fashion
In a thrilling showcase of skill and determination, the Westcliff University men’s volleyball team achieved a monumental feat by clinching their first-ever Cal Pac championship. The journey to this historic victory was marked by resilience and teamwork, as the Warriors overcame formidable challenges to etch their names as champions.
The team’s success can be attributed to many aspects, including the leadership of Head Coach Alex Griffith, whose strategic prowess and unwavering support guided the Warriors to victory. After three seasons of relentless effort, the Westcliff men’s volleyball team ascended to the summit of the Cal Pac championship. Their path to victory was marked by perseverance and composure culminating in a stunning 3-2 reverse sweep of UC Merced in the Cal Pac tournament finals.
Facing adversity with UC Merced leading 24-22 and championship points in their favor, the Warriors displayed a remarkable comeback. Led by senior Thomas Taufetee, the team rallied together to seize control of the match. Leonardo Garcia’s precise setups and Ilias Lazaar’s emphatic kills turned the tide in Westcliff’s favor, leading to a dramatic switch in momentum. Coach Griffith highlighted the team’s focus on defensive excellence as the turning point in the match. The Warriors’ ability to execute defensively and capitalize on key opportunities shifted the match in their favor, paving the way for their eventual victory. In a display of athletic excellence and unity, the Warriors stormed back to win the fourth set convincingly, leveling the match at two apiece. Led by Gabriel Pizza, Connor McCann, and Tom Dempsey, they delivered the final blows, securing a historic triumph for Westcliff University.
