LA Day, the Westcliff Way: Westcliff Students Live Their LA Dreams

Westcliff University’s Student Life department recently took students on an unforgettable journey exploring the sights and sounds of Los Angeles for the highly-anticipated 2024 LA Day! Held on November 2, this special event allowed students to dive into some of the most iconic spots the City of Angels has to offer. More than 20 students and family members enjoyed a day filled with diverse experiences. From the inspiring exhibits at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to the stunning views from the iconic Griffith Observatory, and the electric atmosphere of the world-famous Santa Monica Pier, it was truly an adventure-filled day. This day of discovery gave Westcliff students — many of whom are from countries around the world — the chance to experience the LA they’ve only seen in movies making those California dreams come true.

“One of the most effective ways to build community is through shared experiences,” said Tayler Henslick, associate director of Student Life, and organizer of the event. “Providing students with an opportunity to explore a city with their peers opens the door for more in-depth conversations and making memories with their fellow Warriors.”

Take a closer look at the highlights from each stop:

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) – A Hub of Art and Culture

Westcliff University Student Life - LA Day 2024, LACMAThe first stop of the day was nothing short of inspirational: the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, better known as LACMA. Located just steps from the iconic Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, LACMA offered students the chance to immerse themselves in art from around the world, showcasing a vibrant array of styles spanning multiple centuries. Enthusiastic students couldn’t resist snapping photos at the “Urban Light” installation, a striking display of restored street lamps that has become one of LACMA’s most beloved attractions.

“I loved being in Los Angeles and discovering something new and positive about life in the USA, especially the cultural diversity,” said Zulfiqar Ali Memon, a MSEM student at Westcliff. “I am truly grateful to Westcliff’s Student Life for this incredible experience.”

Filled with creativity, the next stop of the day sparked wonder in the minds of the students.

Griffith Observatory – A Journey into New Worlds

Perched high in the clouds, with the iconic Hollywood sign in the distance, Griffith Observatory provided students breathtaking views of Los Angeles — paired with a stunning observatory experience to match!

Inside, students got hands-on with interactive exhibits, explored the mysteries of the planets, and learned more about our universe. One exhibit became an instant favorite above all else: discovering their weight on different planets and moons! Let’s just say, the perks of the different gravities were a hit.

“LA Day is such a special experience,” shared Yeasin Arafat, an MBA student. “If you ever get the chance, please join events like this! You’ll visit amazing places like the Griffith Observatory and learn all about the solar system.”

The thrill of seeing LA from this vantage point was pure magic and the next stop had big shoes to fill. Spoilers: it did.

Riding the Waves of Fun at Santa Monica Pier

Westcliff University Student Life - LA Day 2024, Santa Monica PierAs the end of the trip drew near, the group headed to their final destination: the iconic Santa Monica Pier. It doesn’t get more LA than this. Situated right on top of the sandy beaches of Santa Monica, the pier is a lively playground of thrills and excitement — and the perfect spot to take in a Los Angeles sunset.

Students embraced the chilly evening with refreshing frozen treats that they’ve never tried before. Adding a special twist to the evening, a Day of the Dead celebration was in full swing, offering students a unique glimpse into Latin culture that is prevalent throughout the city. They learned about this meaningful tradition and truly got a taste of LA’s multicultural flair.

Santa Monica definitely lived up to its reputation and was a memorable way to close out an incredible day exploring the different layers of Los Angeles.

Memories that Last

Westcliff University’s 2024 LA Day was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was an immersive experience that introduced students to the essence of Los Angeles while bonding with fellow students. Ali Memon perfectly summed up the importance of Student Life events like LA Day: “It was truly fun adding a new chapter to my lifetime of memories.” He continued, “I made new friends from all over the world — Colombia, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Spain, and the USA — all in just one day!”

As students returned to campus, they brought back not only photographic memories but also a deeper connection to the city they now call home. “The day was an incredible success,” said Henslick. “Any time a student leaves a Student Life event with a new friend, it’s a win — and that happened in abundance today.”
