Meet Dr. Katherine Grisham, M.B.A, Ph.D., the winner of the 2023-2024 Most Engaging Faculty award in the College of Education at Westcliff University! Dr. Grisham’s commitment to excelling in education is as inspiring as it is diverse.
Global Experience
Dr. Grisham, an adjunct professor based in Miami, Florida, was pleasantly surprised by her recent recognition. “I didn’t expect it at all,” she laughs. “For me, it’s the recognition of my efforts and consistency that I share with my students.”
Her journey in academia began in 2003 when she started as a teaching assistant after completing her bachelor’s degree in Russia. Moving to the United States 12 years ago, Dr. Grisham pursued her passion for higher education, earning a Ph.D. in education and an MBA. Despite her extensive administrative role at Barry University in Miami, she sought more teaching opportunities to stay connected with students. This led her to a position at Westcliff University as an adjunct professor and dissertation committee member.
Revolutionizing the Classroom
Dr. Grisham’s innovative approach to teaching sets her apart. She embraces Westcliff’s flipped classroom model, ensuring her classes are engaging and applied rather than traditional lectures. “I deliver workshops for the students, help them with case studies and guide them through their presentations,” she explains. Her use of modern digital tools allows for a dynamic and inclusive learning environment, accommodating both on-site and remote students.
Championing Inclusivity
Inclusivity is at the heart of Westcliff’s student body and also an important teaching philosophy for Dr. Grisham’s. With a significant number of international students at Westcliff, she leverages her own experience as an international student to support and understand their unique challenges. “I can relate to them on a personal level,” she says. “I understand their struggles and provide the support they need to succeed.”
Dr. Grisham also highlights the importance of cultural diversity in the classroom. By encouraging students to share their cultural perspectives, she fosters a rich, inclusive learning environment where different viewpoints are respected and celebrated. “Diversity allows us to look at problems from various angles and find innovative solutions,” she notes. “So this is what I try to foster in my classroom and celebrate cultures.”
Her dedication to her students goes beyond academic support. Dr. Grisham ensures constant communication, providing flexibility for students to manage their personal and academic commitments. Her engagement with students extends to professional development opportunities, such as delivering workshops and assisting with case studies during on-campus days.
