Westcliff University Honored for Excellence in Supporting Veterans in Higher Education
At Westcliff University, Veterans Day is a moment of sincere recognition for the sacrifices veterans have made. The University is deeply committed to honoring that service by providing resources and support that enable veterans to pursue higher education and thrive in civilian careers. This dedication recently earned Westcliff University recognition at Golden West College’s Veterans Day ceremony, for its efforts to assist veterans and their families on their academic journeys.
The commitment to veterans extends beyond Westcliff’s own campus. Through a partnership with Golden West College, Westcliff has expanded its support and resources to veterans in Orange County who may be at the start of their academic careers. The Veterans Day ceremony welcomed more than 100 attendees who gathered to honor former service members turned students and celebrate those who provide exceptional support for their transitions to civilian life. The event featured a flag-raising ceremony, a stirring rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, and a Marine veteran’s bagpipe tribute to the U.S. armed forces, filling the air with each branch’s anthem. Following the formal ceremonies, veterans shared a meal and camaraderie, building connections based on shared experiences and mutual respect.
Empowering Veterans Through Education
The ceremony also featured speeches on unity, community, and the journey of evolving as veterans apply their skills in new ways. Notable among the attendees was Michael Carter, a Marine Corps veteran and Westcliff DBA student who works at the Tierney Center for Veteran Services as an operations manager. Balancing his studies with his commitment to helping fellow veterans, Michael maintains an impressive 4.0 GPA in his final semesters.
Accepting the award on behalf of Westcliff University was Cristian Cabrera, the assistant director of military and veterans affairs at Westcliff. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Cristian has firsthand experience with the challenges of transitioning to higher education. Reflecting on his role, Cristian said, “As a U.S. Marine veteran who has personally experienced the transition from military service to higher education, I understand firsthand the challenges and opportunities that come with it. It’s an honor to lead Westcliff University’s military team and to partner with Golden West College to help military-connected students navigate their educational journey and maximize their VA benefits. We are committed to providing the support and resources they need to succeed.”
Military Friendly School
Westcliff is a certified Military Friendly School and a proud participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which helps fund tuition for veterans and their dependents. In addition to financial support, Westcliff offers hands-on assistance with credit transfer and enrollment, making the transition from military life to college as seamless as possible. Cristian’s background as an infantry team leader in Afghanistan, coupled with his expertise in human services and rehabilitation counseling, uniquely qualifies him to support veteran students at every step of their journey. Under his leadership, Westcliff’s Military and Veterans Affairs team provides personalized assistance to help each student set and achieve their academic and career goals.
