Westcliff University Students Explore Los Angeles
Westcliff University students recently experienced a day filled with camaraderie, exploration, and the formation of lasting friendships during their much-anticipated Day in LA. Organized by the University student life team, this event aimed to bring students together outside the classroom, fostering a sense of community and connection that extends beyond academic pursuits. The day kicked off at the iconic Union Station, where more than a dozen students from various backgrounds and nationalities all over the world gathered to embark on this shared adventure that highlights Westcliff’s commitment to fostering a diverse and welcoming academic community.
As the group boarded the charter bus, excitement filled the air, and the journey began. The first stop was the historic La Brea Tar Pits, a unique natural history museum where students had the opportunity to marvel at the remnants of ancient life and engage in conversations that extended beyond textbooks and lectures. Next on the agenda was the iconic Griffith Observatory, founded in 1935, it has been the setting for countless famous movies including LaLa Land and Rebel Without a Cause. The observatory, set high up on hills of LA, offered the students breathtaking views of the city and a chance to delve into the mysteries of the cosmos with an interactive museum, telescopes and a planetarium show. It is also one of the best locations in the city to view the world-famous Hollywood sign. Students explored the exhibits and took in the panoramic scenery.
No trip to Los Angeles would be complete without a visit to the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame. Here, amidst the glittering stars embedded in the sidewalk, and famous Chinese Theatre, students captured moments that would be cherished for years to come. The Day in LA provided not only a chance to explore the city’s landmarks, but also an opportunity for students to showcase their creativity through photography, and commemorate their shared experiences together to show family and friends.
The day concluded at the Grand Central Market, a vibrant hub of culinary delights that first opened in 1917 and is located near highly regarded art museums, such as The Broad. Here students were able to wander the halls in search of the perfect meal to wrap up the day. This gathering also served as a rendezvous point for students who couldn’t make it for the full day, but still wanted to join in on the fun. The lively atmosphere, coupled with delicious food, set the stage for meaningful conversations and laughter amongst friends. It became evident that the bonds formed during the Day in LA were the building blocks of a tight-knit community.
The significance of events like the Day in LA, organized by Westcliff’s student life department, cannot be overstated. Beyond the academic realm, students need opportunities to connect with their peers, share experiences, and build a support network that enhances their overall university experience. Head of Student Life, Tayler Henslick, said, “These events not only enrich the student experience but also contribute to personal growth, cultural exchange, and the development of lifelong friendships.” As Westcliff students returned from their day in Los Angeles, they carried with them not only memories of iconic landmarks but also a sense of belonging to a community.
